Avoid learning a German noun as an isolated word. Record its article and plural form beside it so that you have useful information when building a sentence. Start this habit with a small set of everyday nouns.
Write der Tisch — die Tische, die Lampe — die Lampen and das Buch — die Bücher. Here, der, die and das are singular nominative articles. An article can change with the grammatical case used in a sentence.
If colours help, assign one consistent colour to each grammatical gender. Colour is only a memory aid. You cannot always infer gender from a noun’s appearance or meaning, so check it in a reliable dictionary.
Add an example such as Das Buch ist interessant. Then use the same noun in the question Wo ist das Buch? Connecting a word to a meaningful sentence makes your notes more useful for speaking and writing.
Look only at a picture or a meaning prompt, then recall the noun, article and plural. Separate difficult cards for another review. Focus on accurate recall and usable examples instead of adding too many new cards at once.
