Active listening gives each replay a clear purpose. A short conversation about a familiar topic can support several different exercises. If almost nothing makes sense, choose an easier recording before increasing the difficulty.
Listen without stopping. Who is speaking and what are they discussing? Trying to write every word can distract you from the message. A one-sentence summary is enough at this stage.
Prepare two questions before replaying the audio, such as the time of an appointment or what a speaker wants. Note only the relevant details. Now you have a clear reason to listen again.
If a transcript is available, read it after your independent attempt. Find familiar expressions you did not recognise in the audio. Repeat one sentence with the recording and then without it, paying attention to stress and connected sounds.
Practise Could you repeat that, please? as a useful request. Retell the recording’s main message in two sentences of your own. Listen again the next day and notice which sections are easier to recognise.
