A vocabulary card can do more than provide a translation. Combine meaning, article, plural and a short sentence so that each card supports recall and practical language use.

1. Write das Buch — die Bücher and add the meaning book.
2. Include Das Buch ist neu. as an example.
3. Look only at a picture or meaning prompt on the other side and recall the missing information.

Begin with five cards. After recalling each noun, create a new sentence with it. Return to difficult cards in a later session instead of adding too much new material at once.
