Paying attention to the conjugated verb makes German sentence building clearer. In an ordinary declarative main clause, this verb occupies the second position. Position refers to a sentence unit, not necessarily the second individual word.
In Ich lerne heute Deutsch., lerne follows the subject. Move the time expression to the front: Heute lerne ich Deutsch. The verb remains in second position, while the subject moves after it.
In Am Montag lerne ich Deutsch., the two-word phrase Am Montag forms one sentence unit. Lerne therefore still occupies the second position. Counting individual words can hide this pattern.
In Ich möchte heute Deutsch lernen., the conjugated möchte is in second position and the infinitive lernen comes at the end. Practise short examples like this before adding more complex structures.
Write three sentences beginning with ich, heute and am Wochenende. Mark the conjugated verb in each one. Do not apply this pattern to every German sentence: yes/no questions and subordinate clauses follow different rules.
